Gerard Wallop was born in 1898 in Chicago. His father was English and his mother was an American from Kentucky. The family moved to a ranch near Sheridan, Wyoming. He was sent to school in England in 1909. He served in the British Army in World War I. He served in Parliament in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. He married Bridget and they had three children. They migrated to Kenya in 1948.
