Résumé du livre

The dynamic behavior of piling is examined using a method of analysis based on the work of E.A.L. Smith. The original solution proposed by Smith is reviewed, and a more general program is developed and discussed. A study of the influence of the driving hammer is made, and the effect of the elasticity of the ram is shown. Comparisons are made for 28 problems between the wave equation and experimental data reported by the Michigan State Highway Commission. The wave equation is then used to show the effect of the instrumentation which was employed. The dynamic properties for several cushion materials are examined and a method is presented which can be used to determine the dynamic coefficient of restitution and spring constant of a cushion from its static stress-strain curve. The potential accuracy of Smith's method is illustrated by comparing the numerical solution with the results of carefully controlled laboratory experiments on full-size piles tested by Hirsch. Several pile materials were studied and the effect of internal damping and its importance is determined. Limited parameter studies are presented to illustrate the effects of the supporting soil medium.
