Résumé du livre
With the increasing popularity of the Internet, network reliability has become an important issue. Link failure is one of the main causes of service interruption. Protection at the physical layer is fast, but requires dedicated hardware. On the other hand, IP, although it does not rely on specific topology, is slow. MPLS protection is the mechanism for rerouting traffic to a backup LSP in the case of failures. This research presents a methodology for addressing MPLS path, link and node protection, with the primary emphasis on the last two. The approach is a fast and efficient mechanism for rerouting packets when there is a link/node failure in an Ethernet-based network. The mechanism proposed in this research introduces a strategy for preestablishing both the primary LSP and its backup LSP in order to quickly restore the traffic to the backup LSP in case of a failure. A fast and reliable mechanism for detecting a link failure in an Ethernet-based network is also introduced. In addition, this research also presents the design and implementation of the MPLS forwarding engine to support the link/node protection. The experiments executed in this research show that traffic recovery can be achieved in about 30ms.
