There was a time when theatres were at heart of every town, and at the heart of each theatre was the royal box, provided for passing royalty and the lord of the local manor would bring his family to sit there. In Lynda Bellingham's novel, we follow the lives and fortunes of a cast of characters performing in the beautiful Victorian theatre in Crewe, in Cheshire, through a nine-month season in the 1970s: we witness how relationships are formed and broken in equal measure between these intense and committed actors.
