The night before Daisy dies in her hospice bed, Dorothy, her lifelong friend, witnesses her mysterious dying words. The meaning only becomes clear after reading Daisy's diaries, left to Dorothy in her will. Dorothy and Daisy first met during the war-torn, turbulent years of their young lives and shared many experiences tinged with tragedy, hardship and loss but also filled with love and humour. The diaries reveal cameos of Dorothy's life after the war; first in Singapore, as a young colonial wife and mother; then in Oxford telling of her ups and downs and travels through the decades. As the intertwined lives of the two friends are exposed, a secret is revealed and its consequences have long-reaching effects on the lives of Dorothy and her family.
