This book examines the full ledger of the receipts and expenditures of seventeenth-century English diarist Samuel Pepys - a record of eight and one-half years of his recorded professional and social activities, and thus, an understanding of the world of an ambitious member of the seventeenth-century London upper middle class. Revealing the cost of living and enjoyment in London during that time, the records remain relevant today, as needs of individuals, and reasons for spending and accumulating money has remained unchanged.
