Résumé du livre
Abstract: The Malay community of Cape Town has its origin in the slaves and political exiles sent there in the second half of the 17th century. Islam, the religion shared by the Malays and some Indian communities, was officially recognised only a century later and spread through new groups: Malagasi, Black people and mestizos. The unity, divisions and the denomination of this pluri-ethnic community have been conditioned ever since by political and economic choices coming from inside as well as outside its circle. The diachronic study of these various strategies offers an example of the way dynamics of identity are implemented.
