This richly illustrated book focuses on the highly inventive furniture designed by the celebrated modernist architect, R. M. Schindler (1887-1953). His many designs for built-in and freestanding furniture illustrate his concept of "space architecture" or the total designed environment.
An introductory essay by David and Patricia Gebhard details Schindler's architectural heritage in Europe and, after 1914, in America, especially his experience working with Frank Lloyd Wright. It also discusses the sources for and principles guiding his designs. Schindler's three most important essays on furniture and the modem house are also included, along with a "Catalogue of Selected Projects" describing in detail the furniture he designed for 27 of his houses, commercial projects, and commissions.
