Friederich Tillmann was born 1 September 1831 in Nettberge, Germany. His parents were Stephen Tillmann and Catharina Schulte Althoff. He married Mary Ann Gehling (1834-1912), daughter of Bernard Gehling and Elizabeth Bornemann, in 1859 in Festina, Iowa. They had nine children. He died in 1877 in Festina. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Iowa.
