This chapter introduces the concept of optimization in the area of component manufacturing. A short introduction explains the associated concepts, applications, formats and approaches and familiarizes the reader with the terminology. The main body of the chapter examines approaches to optimization in four different component manufacturing applications: die compaction process design, powder injection moulding process design, sintering process design and steady-state conduction design. The methodologies used in the applications include both mathematical iterative methods and experimental optimization methods.
