The Miller family, to any outsider, seemed like a perfect picture of suburban bliss. Their house stood in a neat, upper-middle-class neighborhood, with a manicured lawn and two cars parked in the driveway. Brock Miller, a broad-shouldered man with the look of a former athlete who had let the years soften him, would mow the lawn every Saturday morning. His wife, Linda, a slim woman who always dressed impeccably, even for a simple grocery run, would wave to neighbors as she watered her rose bushes. Their children, Jackson and Daisy, completed the idyllic image: Jackson, the eldest, a tall, scruffy teenager with tousled hair, and Daisy, their precocious twelve-year-old, who seemed too mature for her age.
