Nikolai Gogol was a Russian dramatist, novelist, and short story writer of Ukrainian ethnicity. He was one of the pre-eminent figures of the natural school of Russian literary realism, but his work also demonstrates a romantic sensibility. Some his books satirized political corruption in the Russian Empire, as witnessed in The Government Inspector and Dead Souls. He lived from 1809 until 1852.
