Francis Baylies

This manuscript material includes two letters of Baylies (one on the influence of John Hancock in achieving ratification in Massachusetts of the Constitution; the other concerning the 1830 edition of his book on Plymouth), one document signed while Register of Probate in Bristol County, and five hundred fifty-four pages of notes (in nine notebooks, plus some loose material). These notes include biographical sketches of early American settlers, Massachusetts colonial leaders, and the early proprietors of Taunton, Mass. There is additional material on the early history of towns in southern Massachusetts (especially Taunton and Plymouth), genealogy, English and American poetry, and a few drafts of lectures and addresses delivered by Baylies.
