Letters of Edward Everett, Massachusetts Congressman and Governor, Harvard University President, and Minister to the Court of St. James, include several letters to Joseph Gales and William Seaton requesting publication and clarification of statements made by Everett in Congress in their paper the National Intelligencer; a letter concerning the choice of Josiah Quincy and not Alexander H. Everett as Harvard's President in 1829; a letter protesting the Boston Atlas's criticism of Everett's antimasonic stance and his supposed support for the withdrawal of Henry Clay's candidacy for President; a letter agreeing to present to Congress a memorial against the Kansas-Nebraska bill; and letters concerning his lecture tours which benefited the Mt. Vernon preservation fund. Other correspondents are: James Austin, Daniel Dickinson, Horace Holley, Levi Lincoln, George Livermore, William Seward, and Charles Sumner.
