Despite the fact that she does, in "Le Torrent", depict some farmers, Anne Hebert never made any concessions to the école du terroir. Nor has she endowed her writing with any ethical- function. To the contrary, her texts become increasingly critical of religious values - an undertaking begun in 1942, in les Songes en équilibre. To her independence vis-a-vis contemporary moral and nationalist authorities who claimed to govern the arts, the author allied the notion of the sacralisation of literature. We have taken into consideration the following factors, which permit a partial reconstitution of the genesis of Anne Hébert's poetical vocation: "Life in the Maurice Hébert family; knowledge acquired in the numerous confessional- schools Anne Hébert attended; attended literary influences as well as the professional- experience she gained at the National Film Board of Canada.
