It became apparent, during the winter of 1989-90, that the Troxler soil moisture-density gauge was going to be phased out, at Orono, due to its high cost and the problems with federal licensing. The trial was developed with three objectives: to see if a SMRC (soil moisture retention curve) developed using tensiometers to determine soil moisture tension and a convection drying oven to determine soil moisture percentage (by weight) would produce a SMRC similar to a three year average Troxler SMRC; to check soil moisture percentages (by weight) obtained using a convection drying oven against the percentages obtained by drying small samples in a microwave oven; and, to determine the differences in soil moisture tension at three levels in the rooting zone of the 3+0 white spruce by placing tensiometer sensors at the 5, 10 and 15 cm levels in the soil and recording the measurements.
