Let's Be Friends aims to help young children understand what it's like to be a child with a disability. Joanne (a real child) has severe autism and is nonverbal, but she has many friends, both children with other sorts of disabilities, and the adults who care for her. The children play together and interact, and gain pleasure from their activities, just as 'normal' children do. The book's illustrations are in part the work of an autistic artist, and show the extraordinary creativity that is so often shown by people regarded by society as 'different'.
