Machyn's Diary

Bound in at front are a manuscript title page and preface, both in the hand of scholar, printer, and antiquary, John Gough Nichols (1806-1873). In the preface Nichols states: "This transcript of Machyn's Diary is not that from which I edited the Book, but one which had been previously made, I believe for Sir Harris Nicolas. It is only of use as it may possibly suggest an occasional amended reading of a very obscure and unintelligible manuscript." Nichols is referring to his edition of Machyn's diary, published by The Camden Society in 1848, and to the use of the diary as source material by author Sir Nicholas Harris Nicolas (1799-1848).
