A new non-incremental input-output mechanism (I/O) is presented which receives, partially processes, and encodes data for transfer between transducers and a general-purpose real-time digital computer which comprise a system. The I/O processing is performed rapidly and simply in a quasi-analog fashion utilizing phase-locked techniques on data that is either naturally or forced to be phase modulated on carrier waveforms. The high-speed processing capability of the I/O allows the general purpose computer to be assigned exclusively to the more sophisticated tasks which it can handle most effectively. The concept of the I/O is generalized to permit the transducer-sensor to be treated as part of the system memory, the I/O acting as an addressing scheme. Applications to time sharing and hybrid computation are indicated. The approach results in a General Purpose Real-time I/O which achieves flexibility of tie between transducers and computers.
