Reviews interaction of Southern Ocean sea ice with ocean and atmosphere, and describes recent ship observations of ice cover in east Antarctic pack. Also describes ice drift in this region based on buoy data, and, because of predominance of divergent flow in region, concludes that ice drift has major influence on mass budget of pack.
