The three volumes of Repton's landscapes are illustrated throughout in colour, including views, maps and landscape designs, many with Repton's trademark overlays. Humphry Repton, often regarded as the successor to Capability Brown, was one of the great landscape designers of the 18th century, and he worked for some of the most important noble families of his time. He provided his clients with his designs in "Red Books" (so called for the red morocco bindings he produced them in) which included explanatory text and watercolours, many with hinged or sliding overlays to show before and after views of the same scene. The Red Books were not published, they were elegant notebooks containing handwritten proposals for each commission he took on. In 1976 The Basilisk Press produced a high quality facsimile edition of 3 of the books, paying particular attention to ensuring a consistent colour reproduction for each image and its overlay.
