The original version of this book was written in 1983 in an attempt to provide dental undergraduates with a basic understanding of periodontal disease. At that time, periodontics formed a minor part of the undergraduate curriculum and there was a need for a practical guide to assist the dentist in coping with chronic inflammatory periodontal disease. During the next few years undergraduate teaching changed, and the approach of the book was modified to reflect this. The incidence of dental caries fell and there was a growing interest in the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease. In the past decade periodontology has entered a new phase: one of considerable questioning of old ideas, of speculation and intense research activity. Formerly held concepts about the natural history of periodontal diseases have been overthrown and the authors felt it was now time to update this popular text once more to bring it in line with current thought.
