Being the middle child in a family of ten can be a very lonely business, so Carrie is happy to hear that cousin Josephine, just her age, is coming to visit. But Carrie is dismayed to see that Josephine is someone who never has a hair out of place--quite a contrast to Carrie. Before she can brood, mysterious things begin happening around the farm: money missing, a horse and a gamecock disappeared.
