Résumé du livre

Copies of 331 letters written by or on behalf of the British consul at Livorno (referred to as Leghorn) bound in vellum with Letter Book, November 16th 1831 to August 20th 1834 written on the upper cover. A large number of letters concern shipping in Livorno, including letters to ship's masters about crew members, to merchants about disputes, and to the insurance firm of Lloyd's, referred to here as Lloyd's Coffee House (see Letter 134, 140). Cholera outbreaks in various parts of Europe and quarantine restrictions are recurring topics as well. The letters are numbered and the recipients (including government officials in Italy, Great Britain, and elsewhere, and British residents of Livorno and elsewhere in Italy) are listed in an alphabetical index with letter tabs at the front of the volume. Between Letters 295 and 296 is a copy of a report compiled by Falconer on the state of agriculture in Tuscany (p. 206-218).
