General description of the collection: The William L. Langer papers include a mimeographed manuscript which was found among uncataloged, unorganized materials at the U.S. Army Military History Institute (USA MHI). It bears the title, "OUR VICHY POLICY AND THE NORTH AFRICAN ADVENTURE", and is identified as copy number 15 of 30. Although downgraded in accordance with extant protocols, it has its original "secret" classification markings as well as a brief discussion of that classification in a 3 Oct 1946 War Department memo from Colonel Hugh J. Deeney, Chief of the Adjutant General Division. It is assumed that this is a copy of the original manuscript from which OUR VICHY GAMBLE was published in 1947. Internal evidence suggests there is another, earlier, version. The manuscript is illustrated with contemporary editorial cartoons from unidentified sources.
