The offshore oil and gas industry has a history of outstanding achievements and technological development, successfully overcoming progressively great natural difficulties. History has shown, however, that accidents can still occur, and these can result in serious loss of life, enivornmental and economic damage. Recently, methods have been developed for addressing and controlling these risks, an dit is important that these methods should be adopted in hte new developments in the Russian Arctic Offshore. This paper describes the risk factors which are present in the offshore industry in general and the Russian Arctic in particular. It goes on to show, from some 20 years experience in the North Sea how risk assessment helps to reduce the occurrence of accidents and the planning for emergency response.
