The purpose of this book is to describe the status and distribution of the species of birds known from New Hampshire. It is strictly intended to be an annotated checklist, so such matters as the ecology and life history of the species, while otherwise of great interest and importance, have no place here. Where there is sufficient data available for a species over a period of time, an attempt is made to trace population changes, but this is possible for fewer than half of the species included. The species accounts rely primarily on published data, especially in the period from 1950 to the present, as more fully described below. The cutoff date for records is generally the end of 2009, but we have unashamedly included records of rarities, new species, and other exceptional records through 2010 and even into 2011 that came to our attention while the text was being reviewed and finalized.
