Résumé du livre

The Baltic states are at the doorstep of accession to the European Union. In the space of just ten years Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have gone from being fragile and largely unknown ex-Soviet republics to having a clear and acknowledged place in the construction of Europe. What are the challenges and adjustments that the three countries have had to undergo during this momentous journey? This volume profiles a range of social, political and economic developments in the Baltic states during the 1990s and the early years of the twenty-first century. Its ten chapters tell the story of how small states struggle to establish themselves in regional and international politics, how they attempt to resolve relations with former rulers, how they address questions of multiethnic democracy and social integration, how they build state administrations and foster democratic constitutional norms, and how they reorganise economic structures and develop foreign trade. It will serve as an excellent companion volume for those studying both EU enlargement and post-communist transition.
