The bulk of the collection (in 4 boxes) consists of unprocessed notes, manuscripts and correspondence, with some drawings and black and white photographic prints. The text material is a mix of handwritten notes and typewritten (mostly carbon copies) manuscripts and letters; there are also pencil sketches, some in color. The topics of the written material are primarily Raven's articles on mammalian anatomy, and the results of his collecting expeditions, including Meshie, an orphaned baby chimpanzee that Raven adopted during the 1929-1931 Columbia University-American Museum of Natural History Expedition to Africa.
