Evaluation of Ecological Criteria for Selecting MPAs in Pacific Region

This paper reviews some of the semi-quantitative methods used to choose locations for marine protected areas (MPAs) and discusses their potential use for MPA site selection in the Pacific region of British Columbia. As a template for discussion, the paper uses a slightly modified version of the three natural science objectives & criteria given in a 1998 MPA strategy discussion document, with full realization that socio-economic & other factors must be considered in the final MPA selection process. Factors to consider when scoring criteria are discussed for the following objectives: biodiversity, sustainability, and increased opportunities for scientific research.
