Especially, this study seeks to examine these visual dynamics through which Lawrence's early characters come to understand (or fail to understand) their own places within given historical contexts, and therefore come to some sense of their own identities. These three early novels document a cultural movement from Victorianism to modernism. In large part, the characters' central predicaments may be understood as attempts to formulate stable, central personal identities within a historical context marked
