The 1841 report of Douglass Houghton, Michigan's first state geologist, provided the impetus for the copper rush of the 1840s, but his tragic death preceded successful mining efforts. A long-standing and continuing tradition erroneously attributes to him the primary credit for recognizing the uniqueness and value of the native copper. In fact, however, Houghton believed that all the valuable ores of the Keweenaw would prove to be composed of copper compounds, and he did not understand the significance
