Résumé du livre
Catalogue of an exhibition of manuscripts and drawings by Leonardo da Vinci organized by Leonardo scholar Carlo Pedretti as a tribute to Elmer Belt on his 80th birthday. The introduction provides historical background on Leonardo's sheet of studies for a Nativity from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the "Mona Lisa cartoon" in the Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, both of which are included in the exhibit as reproductions. Five drawings from the Belt Library are on display: chalk, lead point, and pen-and-ink drawings of heads by Francesco Melzi and a Last Supper by Gerolamo Figino; an anonymous sketch of a horse in red and black ink; and a pencil sketch by Edgar Degas after Leonardo's Adoration of the Magi. Also included are Belt manuscripts 35 and 36, both exact transcriptions or "apographs" of early compilations of Leonardo's Trattato della pittura (Treatise on Painting).
