Literature relating to production and managerial control system modeling is reviewed, and a nested multilevel structure is developed to account for observed features of organization. Elliott Jaques' theory of time-span of discretion is reviewed, formalized and incorporated into this model. Empirical validation based on studies conducted in one private and one naval organization is presented. (Author).
