Members of the Fitch family included: Matthew Fitch (died 1609), shipmaster and the first to arrive in America; James Fitch (1622-1702), clergyman and founder of Lebanon, Connecticut; Thomas Fitch (1700-1774), served as Governor of Connecticut from 1754 to 1766; Thomas "Yankee Doodle" Fitch (1724-1795), soldier and inspiration for the song "Yankee Doodle"; John Fitch (1743-1798), an inventor and pioneer in the steamboat industry; Ebenezer Fitch (1756-1833), president of Williams College; and Clyde Fitch (1865-1909), a dramatist and author.
