The bank sponsored a marathon race to promote community involvement and physical fitness as well as focus attention of the downtown and the Grand River. With the bank providing the resources and coordinating the event, over 400 community volunteers participated in some manner to provide for an efficient running of the AAU sanctioned race. Promotional materials included t-shirts, brochures and advertisements placed in various national magazines as well as local publications. With over l,300 participants, the marathon was a huge success. It received much favorable publicity and the bank received many congratulatory letters. The success is reflected in the bank's proposed sponsorship of the marathon in 1979.
