Résumé du livre
"'For here we have no continuing city, but we seek one to come' was the text from Hebrews, ch. 13, v. 14 on which John Burgess preached a sermon at the small Baptist meeting at West Grinstead in April 1787. 'No continuing city' is the story, told largely from his own words, of how (whilst always holding dear those Biblical doctrines of the impermanence of this mortal life) he sought to establish a satisfying existence for his family, with the modicum of earthly comforts to which he felt entitled. This led him to seek a better life in the U.S.A. than he could find in England, which he found oppressive by reason of the many taxes, lack of freedom, and the snobbery of some 'upwardly mobile' acquaintances who denied him their help and friendship when he was down on his luck"--P. vii. John Burgess (1751-1825) immigrated in 1794 with his two of his sons (via New York City) to Mount Pleasant along the Hudson River in Ulster County, New York. His wife, Ann (Edwards) Burgess, remained in England with the rest of the family. Their oldest boy, John Jr., married and remained in England, as did his progeny. The other children who remained with their mother died in infancy. Therefore most descendants and relatives lived in New York and elsewhere.
