Collection comprises .6 cubic feet spanning 1857-1895. Organized in three series: Writings, Speeches, and Correspondence. The largest series of the collection, Writings, primarily consists of manuscript drafts of Banta's history of Indiana University, which later appeared as the first six chapters of History of Indiana University by James A. Woodburn. Also included in this series is a paper on The new purchase by Baynard Rush Hall. The Speeches series includes manuscript copies of three addresses made by Banta and the final series, Correspondence, consists of Banta's incoming and outgoing correspondence. Prominent correspondents include John Watson Foster and IU presidents Lemuel Moss and Joseph Swain.
