Quite different and distinctive in talent, style, and genre, all these directors share a robust sense of creative independence, an ultimate refusal to compromise, that marks them as auteurs. They are shown to be squarely in the maverick tradition of Orson Welles, John Cassavetes, Roger Corman, and Robert Altman, where they are joined by many other notable independent film-makers, whose work is also considered here: to name only a few, women directors Maggie Greenwald and Nancy Lavoca, comic wordsmiths Whit Stillman and Kevin Smith, and African American directors Carl Franklin and John Singleton.
