Chris Mann's newest book of poems is an innovation: it provides a series of portraits, of people as individuals and in groups of individuals. The subjects of these portrait-poems are drawn from a variety of cultural and economic settings. They come from different rural and urban backgrounds, are of different age-groups and genders and speak different languages. The book thus provides a glimpse of the astonishing diversity of the people who are South Africans.
