Résumé du livre
Joseph Hidley: Folk Artist is the first publication devoted solely to the life and work of Joseph Henry Hidley (1830-1872), a self-taught artist who resided most of his life in the rural community of Poestenkill, New York. Generally known today as the painter of a few remarkable townscapes, and little else, current research conducted by art historian, Warren F. Broderick, has identified dozens of works by Hidley that expand our knowledge of this little understood artist. In addition to townscapes, Hidley painted religious scenes, still lifes, decorative wall paintings, and fanciful landscapes based on print sources. Published to accompany an exhibition at the Albany Institute of History & Art, the book includes an introductory essay on Hidley's life and work and a catalogue containing images and commentary for more than forty works by Hidley that includes paintings, prints, wall decorations, a decorated chair, and family photographs drawn from both public and private collections.
