Presents "The Hunt for the Gallega," written by Donald H. Keith and Toni L. Carrell and originally published in "Archaeology" in 1991. Discusses the search by archaeologists for the caravel Gallega at Rio Belen, Panama. Explains that the Gallega was one of four ships of Columbus' expedition in 1503. Columbus left the Gallega behind at his settlement at Santa Maria de Belen, in present-day Panama. Recounts difficulties in finding the remains of the Santa Maria and the La Navidad, ships used by Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) in 1492.
