Résumé du livre

This needs assessment focusses on identifying those cancer-related issues that are important to the Ontario Aboriginal community. The introduction reviews the work of the Aboriginal Cancer Care Unit of Cancer Care Ontario, the cancer-related issues that are distinct for Aboriginal people, and the history of Aboriginal people in Ontario. Chapter 2 describes the methods used to gather the needs assessment data, including questionnaire surveys, individual & group interviews with cancer clients & health workers, and literature research. Results are then presented in chapters covering the following: Aboriginal views of cancer; access to & use of traditional healing; alternative treatments for cancer; cancer prevention activities undertaken in communities and attitudes toward prevention; traditional & non-traditional use of tobacco; cultural sensitivity of cancer services; and the adequacy of cancer services & what services are needed.
