First edition of a scientific work dedicated to the study of Alpine glaciers. The eight volumes contain the work of multiple authors whoa scended the higher regions of the Alps, including extensive discussions of geological and meteorological findings as well as the physical aspects of their climbs and methods of attachment. The atlas contains 40 folio-sized lithographed plates, more than half in color, designed by Henri Hogard. The publishing schedule included volumes 9 and 10, but these became v.8 pts. 2-3; the scheduled 80 atlas plates became 40.
