Describing, at length and in detail, the summer they spent in the Thuringer Wald followed by six weeks in Berlin before returning to autumn in Italy; saying there have been fewer Americans and English in Florence, relating news of those they have seen and describing the sadness in Florence surrounding the death of Marchese Gino Capponi; commenting on a recently published book, "A Short History of Natural Science" by Arabella Buckley and her connection to the author and expressing her disappointment that the Fields will likely not be coming to Florence as their efforts will be on the Centennial Exhibition; adding that her sister wishes to write a few lines to him and to Mrs. Field to conclude the letter; continuing the letter in Susan's hand as she writes to Mr. and Mrs. Fields relating news of her ailing aunt and a forthcoming visit from their niece who will spend the spring with them while she is studying art; expressing their disappointment that they cannot travel to America for the Centennial Exhibition.
