This paper explores how industrial buyers use computer-aided design (CAD) technology to coordinate design activities with some suppliers and not others, and the performance implications of the investment of human and social capital in CAD technologies. The authors find that the impact of CAD use on satisfaction with interfirm coordination varies in a non-monotonic way with the level of analyzability and routineness of the codesign task. Theoretical implications for the literature on the impact of IT on organizations and interorganizational relations in general are discussed,
