This commentary identifies a number of the key problems for women prisoners, based on primary research and on secondary sources; highlights how the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, the key reference in management of prison systems, apply to these problems; identifies other human rights instruments and standards that apply to women's imprisonment; and examines what measures these human rights standards require.
