Résumé du livre
In the iron ore heartlands of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the 1880s, a highly successful millionaire mining magnate who is also a local and national politician has an affair which leads to the birth of a child. To save his reputation and marriage, the perpetrator takes various damage control steps. These include finding, amongst his multitude of employees, a scapegoat to serve as the surrogate husband and father. It also entails forced relocations of those with knowledge of the arrangements to various locations far away within his empire. And it includes relocations of his own family. But he did not anticipate the depths of bitter betrayal felt by his wife who, it appears, sought revenge on all offending parties, including their extended families.
