Résumé du livre

This is the first book to tackle the difficult problem of the role of religion in the shaping of early modern Ireland. Raymond Gillespie takes a stimulating and new approach which identifies the commonalities of religious thought and the differences between confessional groups. The result was an irrevocable intertwining of immanence and transcendence which shaped everyday life. Cultural and confessional frameworks shaped reactions to religious experiences such as the miraculous and pilgrimage, prophecy and prayer. This is a book which goes to the heart of the early modern experience revealing the fundamental assumptions of those who lived in that world.
