Letters concern his daily life in Cattaraugus County, N.Y., Civil War service with the 64th New York Volunteers, attendance at the 1897 G.A.R. Encampment in Buffalo, N.Y., and his gift to Miss Sloan of three buttons he wore during the Civil War, and a button worn by his father during service on the Niagara Frontier during the War of 1812. The last letter, dated 21 Jan. 1901, was written when he was nearly totally blind.
